Developer plans Shanghai alpine village

A Singapore developer plans to build what it says will be the world’s largest integrated indoor winter resort in Shanghai.

Called Winterland Shanghai, it will boast the world’s longest indoor ski trail, Kop Properties said.

Chairman Ong Chih Ching said the US$2.2 billion project would be more than just a winter wonderland.

The ski resort area will be connected to other facilities within the development including a water park, hiking trail and a “beach club” - an arena resembling a beach - 100m above ground.

Ong added that Winterland Shanghai would also include housing, office, retail and hotel space.

The nearest comparison, she said, would be Ski Dubai.

"You can compare us with Dubai but in our case we are building a whole alpine village with ski-in ski-out hotels, restaurants and a half-pipe; while Dubai has one restaurant in the cold area with a penguin petting area."

The concept could also be replicated around Asia, Ong added.

Winterland Shanghai will be built in a new development zone in Shanghai with access to the city’s railway system.

Construction is expected to start in the third quarter of next year.

Bahrain pushes ahead with stalled $51m indoor ski resort

By Shane McGinley - Monday, 14 October 2013 - ArabianBusiness.com

Bahrain is planning to resurrect plans to build a BD20m ($51.6m) theme park, which will include a full-size ice arena and indoor Bahrain ski slope, just months after the project was shelved, it was reported.

An agreement to push ahead with the stalled project was signed this week between Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs Minister Dr Juma Al Ka’abi and Bahraini investor Fouad Shuwaitar, according to a report by Gulf Daily News (GDN).

The surprise decision to reinstate the project comes after officials moved to scrap the much-delayed project last June.

However, new backers from India have come onboard and the project has now been fast-tracked into development by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalia, the report said.

"The park has been abandoned since 2007, when a Kuwaiti investor’s plan for a ‘miniature Disneyland’ was scrapped due to his inability to carry out work," Fouad Shuwaitar was quoted as saying. "Since then, councillors have been looking for other investors and thus we decided to step in with a bigger and better project.”

The theme park will be located at the Muharraq Grand Garden, near Bahrain International Airport, and will include a three-storey shopping centre, business centre, indoor sports arena, outdoor pitches, aquatic museum, karting track, mosque and an elderly home.

Work is due to begin in February 2014 and It is expected to take two and half years to complete.

Dubai is already home to the region’s first indoor ski resort – Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates – and a similar version is currently being built at the under construction Mall of Egypt in Cairo.

The 5 best indoor ski slopes

JO WEDLOCK - CONTENT PROVIDED BY HOUSE OF TRAVEL

If you are still under the impression that skiing is a sport reserved for the middle of winter up a mountain in a far flung country or region, then you haven’t joined the growing craze of indoor snow domes.

Once upon a time an indoor ski area was a small strip of fake plastic that you used special ‘skis’ to get from one end of a small hillock to another - nowadays an indoor ski slope is as close to the ‘real deal’ as it gets.

'Real snow', made with a snowmaker in the same way they do up the mountains, and large ski runs which include full lift facilities means you can ski anytime of the year.

We have one of the best snow domes in the world right here in New Zealand with Snowplanet in Silverdale, just 20 minutes north of Auckland.  However if you are heading overseas and want to take in a spot of skiing but it’s the wrong time of the year, or you don’t have the time to get to the far flung mountains, then check out these snow domes listed below.

Ski Dubai - Dubai
Ski Dubai is an indoor ski resort with 22,500 square meters of indoor ski area. It is a part of the Mall of the Emirates, one of the largest shopping malls in the world!

This amazing snow facility, which must be seen to be believed, opened in 2005 and consists of an 85-meter-high indoor mountain with five different slopes.

Ski Dubai’s longest ski slope run is 400m. Next to the slopes is a 3,000-square-metre play area for everything from toboggan runs and giant snowballs to playful penguins; it even has an ice cave.

SnowWorld - Landgraaf, Netherlands
Landgraaf, Netherlands is home to the world’s largest indoor ski area, SnowWorld. It was opened 2001 and has a total of 35,000 square metres of snow. In 2003 it played host to the world’s first indoor FIS snowboard World Cup.

AlpinCenter -  Bottrop, Germany
If you want to find the world’s longest indoor slope then head to Bottrop, Germany.  Showcasing the usual German precision and efficiency and with a 640 metre ski slope, the AlpinCenter is one of my favourites!

Snow Funpark -  Wittenburg, Germany
Skiing down a 31 percent grade might not be most people’s idea of fun, but the astutely named Snow Funpark in Wittenburg, Germany boasts the world’s first indoor black diamond run.

This, as well as a half-pipe, luxury hotel, restaurant area and the best snow-making technology you can find, makes Snow FunPark perfect for everything from professional competitions to fun family ski holidays.

Snow Factor - Glasgow, Scotland
The biggest indoor slope in the UK is Snow Factor in Braehead, Glasgow, Scotland.

It’s much smaller than the German slopes, but if you are in the UK you may want to check it out. It features a 200m long main slope, with a 50m x 50m dedicated teaching slope.
